HOW I FINISH THE BACK OF MY EMBROIDERY HOOP

  1. Trim around the excess fabric leaving at least 1 inch/ 2cm of fabric.
  2. Gather the excess fabric. Thread a needle with enough thread length to go around all the way the circle. Use left over embroidery floss for this. Tie a large knot in one end. Sew around the edge of the excess fabric with large running stitches. The stitches should be about 1/4 inch /0.5cm from the fabric edge.
  3. When you reach the beginning of the stitches, pull the thread to gather the edges in toward the center. Take a back stitch or two to secure the gathering, then tie a large knot close to the fabric.
  4. Stitching the back covering in place. Grab the circle of felt. place the felt circle on the back of the embroidery and stitch around the edges. Come up through the felt, then go down through the gathered fabric at an angle so you can come out at the edge of the embroidery frame. ( blanket stitch )
  5. Continue all the way around the hoop and then secure the end with a hidden knot.

Now your embroidery hoop is ready for displaying.

* I use felt as a backing because you can pull it and make the back drum tight.
* Feel free to finish or not finish the backing of your hoop in any way. This is one way to
do it. There are some many different ways to finish your hoop.

HOW I PROTECT THE BACK OF MY EMBROIDERY WORK FOR A TOTE BAG

I use iron on inter lining to protect the back of my embroidery work. I do this because I’m using it as a bag and don't want anything I put in my bag to get stuck in the backing of my embroidery work. If you use your embroidery work simply to display, this is not necessary.

I simply cut a piece of iron on inter lining a little bigger than my embroidery work. I cover the back of my embroidery work and simply iron it on. To protect the iron I put a piece of fabric in between the iron and the inter lining (sometimes the iron can get dirty/sticky from the interlining).

I don't like to slide over my work I place the iron from place to place. When I sew the bag together the edges will be concealed in the seam.
